Walnut Hill Volunteers In Patrol Minutes

June 30, 2010

The monthly meeting was called to order by President Bob Noyes at 7 pm.

Members present were Bob Noyes, Paul Figel, Linda and Art Befort, Joe and Mary Ann Mathews, Jean Ryan, Bill Marx, Chuck Pomatto, Ilda Manriquez, and new member Carol Hosmer. Guests were a prospective new member Luanne and Sergeants Burnside and Michael Doeringsfeld of the Dallas Police Department.

Sgt. Burnside reported the crime statistics for our area from last month. We had 4 thefts of a motor vehicle: 3 were at parking lots in the 10,000 block of Marsh Ln. and one was from the driveway of a residence at the 10,000 block of Hedgeway (car door was unlocked).

There was 1 car stolen from a store parking lot on the 10,000 block of Marsh.

Items were taken from an unlocked locker at a school in the 4100 block of Merrell.

There were 4 residential burglaries:

• 10,000 block of Crestover (unlocked garage, bicycle equipment taken)
• 10,000 block of Gooding (broke back fence and entered through garage)
• 3700 block of Meadowdale (pried open garage door and entered)
• 10,000 block of Hedgeway (entered house through unlocked door)

These 10 incidences represent 2 less than the same month last year. Nevertheless, 3 of the 10 were crimes that could have been prevented if people had locked their doors.

Sgt. Doeringsfeld reported that the police would like to hold monthly Crime Watch meetings for the leaders of the Northwest Division instead of the quarterly meetings being held now. They need more volunteers to canvass the neighborhoods and ask about their major concerns.

The Dallas Police Department declared July to be Watch Your Car Month.

Linda Befort reported the Crime Watch treasury has $6,365.97 including the following expenses: $205.08 patrol magnetic signs and $28.79 website domain name renewal. The Enhanced Neighborhood Patrol total collected is $29,257.08. We need $10,000 more to cover our 5 day a week expense. She also suggested we order more Neighborhood Patrol signs for fences. Paul will check on prices.

Chuck reported that there were 52 hours of patrols last month. Thanks goes to the following members who patrolled: The Mathews, the Conlins, the Noyes, the Beforts, Martha Templeton, Cheryl Templeton, Joyce Tepley, Gay Boyer, Paul Figel, Bob Turney, Ilda manriquez, Patrice Newman, Bill Marx, Randy Griffin, Barbara Stone, and Jean Ryan.

Carol Hosmer reported 2 recent burglaries on Constitution. Ilda reported on a woman that has been parked in front of her house in her car day and night.

The 4th of July picnic will be held at Fieldfare Court if the recent rains make the park too muddy.

Meeting adjourned at 8 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Jean Ryan
Acting Secretary

Volunteers in Patrol is a program sponsored by the Dallas Police Department to reduce crime by having citizens patrol their own neighborhoods and report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police. All volunteers must complete a one day training course given at the police North Central Substation to qualify.

The program requires a small commitment each month – about 3 hours – 2 hours minimum to patrol the neighborhood and 1 hour attendance at the monthly meeting. Being a Volunteer in Patrol is not for everyone. If you wish to be a part of this special group of highly committed neighbors whose main concern is our shared safety, print off the application and liability release form, and send them to:

WHHA VIP
P.O. Box 29643
Dallas, TX 75229

After applying, the police department will do a background check on you. If you pass, you will be notified of the next training session. Once you are trained in basic observation skills and police reporting procedures you will be teamed with a seasoned VIP person for your first patrol through the neighborhood. All patrols are made with teams of two people. The monthly patrol schedule and assignment of patrol partners is put together at each meeting.

There is no better way to contribute to the safety of your neighborhood, to get to know your patrol partner better, and to enjoy an ever-changing leisurely ride through our area, than to be a Volunteer in Patrol.

Join us at 7:00 PM on the last Wednesday of each month at the Walnut Hill Recreation Center, 10011 Midway Rd. The membership meeting is open to anyone.
